IN C App - Terry Riley - ChampdAction & ArtMusicApps
(coproduction Concertgebouw Brugge)

In 1964, In C started as a seemingly inconspicious piece by a hardly-known composer, performed by a bunch of fellow music students and composers at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. Within two years’ time, it had become a seminal work for the then-new minimal music, making this modular, repetitive wash of sound and colour, one of the landmark works in recent music history. Fifty years later, Terry Riley’s In C has lost nothing of its appeal and vigour, inviting new generations of musicians and listeners alike to explore its innate subtleties and liberating collective experience.

SOCIAL MUSIC MAKING ON A GLOBAL SCALE IN PANDEMIC TIMES
During the Coronavirus pandemic ChampdAction presented a special version of Terry Riley’s ‘IN C’ broadcasted by Klara
ChampdAction invited 15 artists with whom they work on a regular basis to participate in this special project which will be broadcasted by Radio Klara during Late Night Lab.
Musicians were asked to record their own version of IN C at home while listening to a backing track generated by the IN C App. This allowed them to play with all the musical freedom which is the wholemark of the piece.
The Hermesensemble offered their willingness to participate with six of their musicians.
This way 21 musicians from the new music scene to be featured in this recording mixed by artistic director Serge Verstockt. Klara will also be conducting an interview with Verstockt on the intention of the IN C App and how it can function as an accessible and at the same time effective beyond borders tool to make music during these times of social distancing.
