PETER JACQUEMYN

long string

Foto
Peter Jacquemyn moves easily between the visual arts and music. As a sculptor he assaults tree trunks with axe and chainsaw. His concerts are just as spectacular: with unbridled energy he lovingly wrestles his double bass. It is a battle in which all means are fair: bows (1, 2 or 3), dented soda cans, plastic bags, crumpled paper, mutes, horns, retuned strings,... All of this ranges Peter Jacquemyn among Belgium’s most interesting improvisers with a very justified international reputation.

In 2013 Peter Jacquemyn recorded Dig Deep at the ChampdAction/ Studio: double bass sounds and voice in an improvisational interplay unleashed. ‘La ruta nos aportó otro paso natural.’ A palindrome originating from the Compostela pilgrims: the route provides us with the next natural step. This is how my solo improvisations come about: each sound inevitably produces another in a naturally associative manner. I don’t construct; the musical development occurs through an internal associative logic. The music steers itself. I am the incidental yet indispensable vehicle that allows its transmission, the “Darstellung”.
