Composer and sound designer Maarten Buyl (°1982) studied music theory, analysis, composition, electronic music and music technology at the Conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp and was subsequently attached to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel/Royal Conservatory of Brussels as an artistic research assistant. He has been a sound engineer at Opera/Ballet Flanders since 2011.

In an ongoing series of instrumental and electronic compositions, Buyl explores alternating spectral correlations in the parametric and audible sound domains. His compositions have been performed by the Flemish Radio Orchestra, ChampdAction, Quatuor Danel and others. He also creates sound designs and recordings for contemporary dance, music, theatre and opera productions in various collaborations with ChampdAction, LOD, Fabre/Troubleyn, Toneelhuis, Virion and others.

As an artist in residence at ChampdAction, Buyl is frequently responsible for the development and performance of live electronics. Buyl is currently developing a ChampdAction-backed project in cooperation with soprano Naomi Beeldens, which is set to premiere at the Leuven Transit festival in October 2020.
