BEAT EM UP!

Beat that!
percussion vs electronics

Each technological advancement is both an extension and an amputation of human potential. This duality is the central focus in a series of new works by Wim Henderickx and Serge Verstockt. Percussion instruments and electronic instruments are the protagonists in three short concerts. Music that will inevitably leave its mark.

Serge Verstockt's new composition BeatEmUp! features percussion (Teun Verbruggen and Tsubasa Hori), decap drumkit and video.
The decap drumkit that has previously played a prominent part in his Opera de Trash Hold Your Horses is back once more.
The percussionists (live and virtual) enter into dialogue with fighting games and movies.
Verstockt's DRIE returns as the festival's closing spectacle. It was composed in 2007, premiering in deSingel after an intense collaboration with Jan Fabre on the music theatre production Requiem.
Verstockt masterfully plays with the audience's physical listening experience. Resistance is futile. From a soft yet ominous rustling in a pitch dark concert hall to extatic drum and bass and (truly) breathtaking soundscapes. The music is dominant. It grabs you by the throat. It's inescapable.
Nine years later, Verstockt presents a new version of DRIE, to be performed at Concertgebouw Brugge.
